In My Art I Attempt to Explain Life and Its Meaning to Myself
The Meaning of Art, The Art of Meaning
fine art
noun \ˈärt\
something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings [Source: Merriam-Webster]
Everybody is an artist. According to the word's most basic definition, an artist is but a person who creates art. Art is subjective — eastward.g. "beauty is in the middle of the beholder" — and therefore, cannot be measured by its significance or the level of skill with which it is created. Its subjective nature makes art's only measurable quality the fact of whether or not information technology exists.
So how can we judge art, actually? Salvage for a slice's beingness, in that location is nigh nada definitive well-nigh it. To me, good art is transcendent — of both time and accented meaning. It is inherently controversial. Good art can mean something dissimilar to everyone, eliciting a Debate to the Death or just an Agreement to Disagree. I not simply believe good art tin can cause problems; I believe it can solve them.
Good art has the power to inspire and provoke. Good art is contagious. It also has the ability to distract and envelop. Whether we are creating information technology or appreciatively immersed in information technology, proficient art is there for any reason nosotros need it to be.
At present, since I've outlined my beliefs about good art, 1 might suspect that I also believe in bad art. But that is not the case. Similar I said before, art'due south innate subjectivity doesn't permit us to declare whether it is "good" or "bad." However, I do believe — and I think many would agree — that there's just a certain feeling we experience when nosotros come across good art, when nosotros know it's good.
I'grand talking almost that feeling you become when you watch a movie, hear a song, read a book, see a painting, aroma a perfume, taste a dish, bear on a sculpture, or fifty-fifty witness a moment. That feeling that everything in your world is sinking, and while your normal reaction should be to try to swim upwards, your instinct is telling you to drown in whatever it is. That feeling when you know your whole life just inverse, even if information technology'due south a pocket-sized alter, even if nobody else will ever know near information technology, fifty-fifty if it's just for a 2nd.
That'southward proficient art.
Not merely exercise I believe nosotros are all capable of creating art — I believe nosotros are all capable of creating good fine art. And that's the beauty of art. Art can exist anything. Equally lame as information technology sounds, dazzler is everywhere; and although everybody wields a unique perspective, this is exactly what makes art so bountiful.
Merely art's abundance may sometimes act as a road cake. While it does inspire and provoke idea, at that place exists an extraordinary challenge to be original. Considering of this, art and the force per unit area to create good fine art tin can overwhelm and distract.
Many people I've met in my adult life seem to accept an irrational fearfulness of creating something new and truly existence original. I believe this is a event of that force per unit area, that overwhelming challenge of digging deep and producing something nobody'due south e'er seen, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted before. Considering what if it sucks?
When I feel art I appreciate, I wonder what it is that makes it valuable. From where does that value originate? What makes this specific article or song or picture show resonate with me or any other person for that matter?
I ponder these aforementioned questions when I create art, but with a trivial more inward focus. What makes something I create valuable to me? — and — Does that value increase if my art affects other people in the aforementioned manner? Or is my lone appreciation enough to go far meaning?
I wonder this because, while there is plenty of art around us, there is a lot of art that remains individual — or in this social and digital age, unshared.
I like to "judge" my ain creations based on two criteria: a.) How does this help me? and b.) How does this assistance others?
Fine art is often an outward expression of our emotions, only information technology'southward not limited to that. Creating art allows united states to express our thoughts, fears, and desires — to almost literally throw our personalities onto a canvas or into a guitar riff. And then, in the most basic sense of my first benchmark, that is how it helps me (or whoever the creator may be). Fine art provides us an outlet for our inflated sadness, our temporary acrimony, our wishful thinking, our newfound happiness.
But expert art eclipses whatever it ways to the creative person. Good art does a service for others, and while it may not hateful the same thing or comport the aforementioned value for everyone, it not simply serves as an outlet for the creator's expression only for the audience's as well. Good art provides u.s. an outlet for our feelings and our genius. Good fine art resonates.
And then, when an creative person creates something important to him/herself and keeps it private, does it devalue that slice of art? I've created a lot of things over the years that are valuable to me, just I've hesitated to share some of them for any reason. Possibly information technology'south time I reconsider.
